I am honoured to be given the opportunity to serve the society as your President for the next two years.
This year marks the 21st year that I have been a member of this society and the 25th year since I first started as a “baby” medical officer in Anaesthesia at the old KK Hospital. In that time, I have seen the local Anaesthesia community and this society grow significantly in numbers and diversity.
Today, the needs and aspirations of our members are more diverse than ever. As we all strive for ‘work-life balance’ in the busy-ness of life in fast paced Singapore, it is also increasingly difficult to connect and engage with members.
Beyond the traditional core activities of the society, I would like to see how the society can better meet the varied needs of our members. Firstly, I would like to strengthen and build on the “Special Interest Group” or SIG initiative. This has provided a popular avenue for members with common subspecialty interests to share and build on their interests. I intend to give more support and resources from the society to organise more activities and to formally appoint SIG Chairs with clearer terms of reference and responsibilities to the society.
Secondly, I would like to provide greater support for nascent research among members. We will be launching a new “SSA Research Award” in 2016 with a cash award of $2000-$5000 each to help fund worthy research in our Restructured Hospital departments. We hope that these awards will help spur more research interest and activities among our members, both young and old, as we seek to advance the science and practice of Anaesthesia in Singapore.
Lastly, I would like to organise more light-hearted social activities where members can meet and interact over food and drinks, and maybe even play some games. Together, there is much we can do if we work collectively. I will look forward to your robust support!
