On 16th October 2015, Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (SSA) celebrated the 169th anniversary of World Anesthesia Day by hosting a gathering for all anaesthesia specialists from both public and private sectors and residents from all sponsoring instituitions. This event aimed to create opportunity to develop great camaraderie among anaesthesia doctors from different generations.
The evening’s programme started with a delightful selection of delicious Penang food from Penang Place. Dinner was followed by a series of mini talks.
Quoting GQ Colton from Lancet 1873 ” ….to use any anaesthetic successfully requires experience. It does not necessarily require great knowledge in chemistry or surgery…”
Thus, the 1st talk of the evening was titled “ Lessons from the past” by Dr Easaw Thomas who shared some history of anaesthesia in Singapore in 1980s to 1990s. The subsequent talks revolved around the boons and banes of anaesthesia practice in the public and private sector (Chan Soo Toon, Kenneth Tan) which gave our young residents an idea of what life would look like if they stayed in instituitional practice or moved on to private practice.
The evening’s entertainment ended with a short skit depicting the history of anaesthesia by the residents and a group photo to commemorate the event.
Sponsors for the event included Abbvie, Pfizer, IDS and Olympus.
